The fortified town was founded in Baturin 1575g. Polish King Stefan Batory as the northern outpost of the Zaporozhye Cossacks, to protect the north-eastern borders of the state.
The first dated mention of Baturin found in documents in 1625.
At 1654g. Baturin receives city status with Magdeburg law and the magistrate.
Since 1669 Baturin became the official residence of the left-bank Ukrainian hetman - Demian sinner (1669-1672), Ivan Samoilovych (1672-1687), Ivan Mazepa (1687-1708). This was the heyday of the city and fortress. Build many buildings, prosperous trade and handicrafts. Baturin has more 20,000 people, about 100 hectares, 40 churches and 2 monasteries.
